Forty-eight hours later and Rømø seemed a world away to Des. Dr Roberts’s new way of working was still bedding in, but it was already clear that the additional reporting procedures in the team were slowing up the research effort. He knew there was no point in making the case to Sir Gavin, as it would just be dismissed as negative thinking, and in any case would be judged way too early an intervention to be considered objective. Notwithstanding the new communications and documentation arrangements, Des was also constrained by the impending visits of Aldo de Leonibus and Eve Grainger. Both were much more than social calls, requiring tours of the Lauriston and Harwell as well as formal peer assimilation and project validation assessments.

It was always a pleasure for Des to meet Aldo. Although their meeting had a formal element, theirs was an old friendship forged over many years which provided a social dimension to their dialogue. The timing was good as far as Des was concerned. Despite the relative success of his second Rømø trip, the news from home had been less so. Still nothing on Abi, except Miles seemed to think some Turkish kebab seller in north London was key to the investigation. It was true he vaguely remembered Willoughby talking about it but that was a while ago and there had been nothing since. Curiously, Sue had been in a better frame of mind. He had put that down to a game of bridge and a choir rehearsal in the church hall. Trying to make sense of the upheaval in home life was difficult. Strangely he was getting used to Miles becoming a fixture once more, having previously moved out six years earlier, and even WPC Wendy seemed to have an unusual ability to become anonymous, considering she had almost become their unofficial lodger. The stress of the return to work was influenced by his need to put together an induction for the Russian – Latvian or whatever he was – Guntis Karins, over the coming week. That in itself should not have been difficult but it was trickier to tell from the CV he had been sent what grasp of the technology the man actually had. What’s more, it would in all likelihood take him several months of personal observation to know. That was the real reason why Sir Gavin had made Des the mentor; it was just another load he had to bear, an obstacle to be overcome.

But for now the attention had to be on Aldo. Sir Gavin had not been aware that this visit had been a personal request from the guest and had assumed it was a periodic inspection for the IAEA, a reputationally important opportunity for the Lauriston.

Sir Gavin instructed that Professor de Leonibus was to be regarded as a VIP guest and was to be given access to all research data. Kelly had smiled when he had read Sir Gavin’s emailed instruction. Aldo was, of course, very good and an
